John Leo Sullivan, formerly of New Castle, passed away in his home surrounded by his family, Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the age of 84.
A graduate of William Penn High School and the University of Maryland, John served in the Navy during World War II and then in the Army until 1971, retiring at the rank of Lt. Col.
Following his career with the military, John worked under four Delaware Governors as the Secretary of Health and Social Services, Director of the Division of Revenue and Commissioner of Corrections, retiring from public service in 1987.
He was a member of the American Legion, Lions Club and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasons.
John enjoyed golfing, square dancing, traveling and spending time with his family.
He is loved and missed by his wife, Catharyn Marie; their six children; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2010, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Masonic services will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Burial will be at Sharon Hills/Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
