Rev. James E. Pippin

The Rev. Dr. James Edwin Pippin, age 71, of Earleville, died peacefully at Union Hospital, Elkton, surrounded by his family on Jan. 6, 2010.

Father Pippin was born Oct. 29, 1938, in Dover, DE., to William Edwin Pippin and Mary Pryor Pippin Phillips and grew up in Millington. He attended Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va., and graduated from Galena High School in Galena. He joined the USMC attaining the rank of Sergeant. Later he became Asst. Manager of Howard Furniture Store in Dover, DE.

He was a graduate of Wesley College, Dover, Virginia Seminary, Alexandria, Va., and earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore.

Father Pippin was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons and to the Sacred Order of Priests in 1972. He served as rector of St. Paul’s, Trappe, St. Paul’s, Vienna, Choptank Parish, Cambridge, All Saints’ Church, Flor­ence, S.C., and St. Anne’s Parish, Scottsville, Va. Father Pippin retired from active service in 2004 and moved back to his beloved eastern shore of Maryland serving as part time Priest-in-Charge of St. Augustine Parish, Chesapeake City.

Father Pippin was President of the Standing Committee in the Diocese of Easton and Chairman of the Finance Committee in the Diocese of VA. He served as State Police Chaplain with Barracks 1 Easton for nine years. He was ap­pointed to the State Human Relations Commit­tee of Maryland by Governor Harry Hughes. He served as Chairman of the Board of York Place, York, S.C., and as military chaplain of the State Guard of SC and the VA defense Force retiring as Chaplain (Lt. Col.).

Father Pippin is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elsie Thompson Pippin; daughter, Gloria Pippin (John) Turner; son, Edwin Oliver (Pris­cilla) Pippin, all of Florence, S.C.; six grandchil­dren, five great-grandchildren, brother, David W. (Kathy) Pippin of Frederica; sisters, Kathryn (Jack) Faulkner of Tallahassee, Fla., and Connie Pippin Price of Georgetown, Md.; and a stepbrother, William (Lesley) Lowman of Onley, Va.

Vigil and Visitation will be Monday, January 11 in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena. The Vigil will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. with a memo­rial service by the members of the Jason D. De­Mileo U.S. Marine Corps League Detachment, Centreville, followed by vigil prayers led by the Rev. Henry N.F. Minich, visitation from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Church, 310 George St., Chesapeake City, on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. Interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna, DE.
