Ernest E. Kelley (affectionately known as Pop Kelley) 64, of Dover, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at home.
Born May 23, 1945, in Eckman, W.Va., he was the son of Lucinda Kelley and the late James W. Kelley.
He was baptized in Jesus's Name as a young boy and always expressed the importance of being in Christ in his conversation. He attended church at the Pentecostals of Dover. Mr. Kelley joined the Air Force in January 1965, where he faithfully served his country for eighteen years. In 1987, he began a new career as a Civil Service employee, retiring in December 2006 after working twenty years. Mr. Kelley was a Materials Handler in the Aerial Port Squadron at Dover Air Force base.
Mr. Kelley loved music, cars and sports. The "Philadelphia Eagles" was his team! He loved his family. He raised his family to be charitable, compassionate, loving and kind. He loved his children but his grandchildren stole his heart. He always had a smile. He loved children, not just his own, but those surrounding him in the neighborhood and church.
Mr. Kelley is survived by his wife and best friend of 42 years, Mittie Kelley, the love of his life; two daughters and their husbands, Dawn and Gary Lockridge, and Joyce and Andrew Leatherbury of Dover; two sons, Jerome and Kimberly Kelley of Houston, Texas, and Jerard Kelley of Miami, Fla.; his grandchildren, Severa Moore, Kelle and Charlisse Washington, Kayln Kelley, Joscelyn Morgan, Deijah Scales; and great-grandson, Saivon Moore. He is also survived by his loving mother, Lucinda Kelley of Dover; two sisters, Joyce Keels of Yonkers, N.Y., and Michelle Kelley of Delaware; a brother, Darnell Kelley and wife Mari of Dover; two special aunts, Hattie Roach of Hampton, Va., and Martha Franklin of Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends may call on the family from 9-11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Pentecostals of Dover, 4462 West Denney's Road. for a celebration of his life. Funeral services will follow the viewing at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at Sharon Hill Memorial Park in Dover, DE.
