Maybelle Coughlan, age 90, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, after battling several illness. She passed away at the Masonic Home in Wilmington.
She was born on May 12, 1919, to Robert and Minnie Davis Hickman in Girdletree, Md., the youngest of 6 children. She attended Snow Hill High School in Snow Hill, Md., graduating in 1938.
She graduated as a registered nurse from the Delaware Hospital in Wilmington, and had several nursing jobs in the area until she married. In September 1946, she married Thomas Coughlan at the Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church. They lived in the Wilmington area where Tom worked for Bell Telephone and she became a housewife. She had her first child, Debbie in 1948. They moved to Dover, Delaware when Tom was transferred. In 1959 she had her second child, Diane.
Throughout these later years, Maybelle was active with the Presbyterian Church of Dover, and Job’s Daughters and the Masonic Lodge with her husband. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, painting on canvas, cooking, spending time at the beach and Pot Nets, where she liked to fish and crab. She also loved a good joke and would both read them and collect them.
Due to health issues in 1999, she moved into State Street Assisted Living (formerly Elderwood) in Dover. She made one more move to the Highfield Masonic Home of Delaware in 2008, where they took very good care of her.
Maybelle was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Coughlan in 1989, past Grand Master of Delaware and past Master of Union Lodge 7, Dover. Also her sisters, Anna Hoch, Carolyn Hickman, and Alma Hickman; and a brother, Robert Hickman.
She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Hurney and family, Dick, Sean and Kim of Laytonsville, Md., Diane Wyttenbach and family, Brian, Brian Jr., and Andrew of Middletown; her brother, Albert Hickman Sr. of Centerville; sister-in-law, Anne Keely of Dover; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Doris Coughlan of Dover; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, in the Trader Funeral Home Inc., 12 Lotus Street, Dover. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, in the funeral home. Burial will be held at Sharon Hills/Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden, DE.
The family requests that donations be sent to the Highfield Masonic Home of Delaware, 4800 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807 to help support the caring people of this facility, who gave Maybelle and her family peace. Donations can also be sent to Compassionate Care Hospice, 702 B Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805. Their help and support in her last days gave her family great comfort.
