Hockessin, DE

Florence Reynolds Clark, age 83 of Hockessin, DE, died on Thursday, December 17 at Manor Care, Pike Creek, DE.

Florence was born in Elsmere on December 9, 1926, daughter of the late Helen Lednum Reynolds and the late John W. Reynolds, former mayor of Elsmere. She graduated from the University of Delaware in 1948 with a degree in Theater and English. In 1982 she was a founding member of central Delaware M.A.D.D. and, along with the head of the Highway Safety Department and Chief of the Delaware State Police, pursued a DUI law which was presented to and passed by the Delaware legislature.

Florence was a dedicated University of Delaware alumna: she was a Delaware Diamond, a member of the Alumni Association, the Blue and Gold Club and the Carpenter Center, a football tailgater and an active member of the Academy of Lifelong Learning. Most importantly, with her love of theater, she enjoyed and supported the Professional Theater Training Program as a member of its Development Committee. Through the Academy, she worked to build an audience and financial support for the Program.

Florence was also a member of Hockessin United Methodist Church, the Jonathan Caldwell Chapter DAR, the "Ex Cons" (a women's luncheon group of former Conradians from the Class of 1944), and the Women's Association of Coffee Run. She enjoyed body-surfing along the Delaware coast, from Fenwick Island to Rehoboth, during the summer, and was a passionate reader all year long. Theater of any kind was special to her, as was jazz music, travel, cruises and visiting museums. She is predeceased by her husband, Richard C. Clark of Camden, DE.

Mourning her loss are her beloved companion, Irwin Engelson of Elkton, MD and her sons Richard R. Clark (Leslie) of Woodbury, NJ and J. Jeffrey Clark (Pamela) of Caledonia, MI. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Kimberly Cornett (Sean) of Wyoming, MI, John Jeffrey Clark, Jr. (Nancy) of Kentwood, MI, Kelly E. Clark of Caledonia, MI, Daniel C. Clark and James R. Clark of Woodbury, NJ, and by one great-grandchild, Isabella Rose Cornett of Wyoming, MI.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, DE from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23rd, with a service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden. A memorial service will also be held in Wilmington after the holidays, on a date to be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Professional Theater Training Program/REP or the Academy of Lifelong Learning of the University of Delaware. Checks should be made out to the University of Delaware, directed to either organization, and mailed to University of Delaware Development Office, George Evans House, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716.
